Things to do before you paint your exterior painting

You probably know by now that preparation is a key part of any painting project. To get the best result, there are many things you should do before you even pick up a house painter. These are the three most important.

Cleaning

Cleaning is an important aspect of any exterior painting job. Your home’s exterior can collect all sorts of materials. Even slight dirt or grime build-up on your home will make it difficult to paint.

First, clean your exterior using a sponge and warm soapy water. Scrub to get rid of any dirt or grime. You may also need bleach to remove any mould. High-pressure cleaners are used by many painting services to achieve the best results. If you have one, it’s time to make use of it.

Sanding & Filling

This is especially important if the surface is in poor condition. Even if the surface is smooth, without cracking or peeling, it’s worth a light sanding. This is to balance the wall and allow your paintbrush to glide smoothly along the surface. A uneven surface isn’t ideal for painting on as it can lead to uneven paint application.

Surfaces that are in poorer condition may have cracks and holes. You will need to use a body glue to fill in the gaps and create a consistent surface. A filler solution can be purchased at most hardware stores for a very low price. It can either be powder-based and mixed with water or decorators caulk which you use around trim and frames.

Priming

For almost all types of paint, priming is a must. This is especially true if you are using a new colour. Timber, for example, can offer the required adhesion to allow the paint to spread evenly. If you don’t prime your exterior, you could end up with a messy and unsightly result. You may be able to see the previous colour through the paint if you don’t apply at least two coats of primer.

The surface you are painting on will determine how you do this. There are many speciality primers available, including ones for wood, concrete, plaster, and metal. Make sure to choose one that’s specifically designed for your surface.

These are just three of the things you should do. Plan your paint job in advance. Plan a day for the job and remember that it may take longer than you expect, especially if you consider all the preparation work.
