The Guide to NDIS Cleaning Supports and Important Things to Consider
You are curious about NDIS cleaning support and how it works? Learn all you need to know about funding and cleaning assistance for NDIS members.
Does NDIS cover cleaning?
In a previous post we discussed and the three types of NDIS funding categories. Core Supports include household cleaning, as well as other assistance such as cooking and yard maintenance. This is what your plan calls “Assistance with Daily Life”. This funding category can help you meet your daily needs and achieve your goals. The NDIS can fund cleaning, so in summary, yes!
What cleaning is the NDIS funding?
If your disability directly impacts cleaning, the NDIS will fund it. You may find it difficult to do laundry or vacuum because of your disability. The NDIS might be able fund funding to hire a cleaner for these tasks.
You may be eligible for NDIS cleaning assistance if you live with others. However, this may only apply to your bedroom and not the whole house. The people who live with you might take care of cleaning other areas.
The National Disability Insurance Agency will consider whether you have been receiving such assistance in the past. If you live in a shared housing unit that provides cleaning assistance, the NDIA may deny your request or require additional evidence to prove your need.
Do cleaners have to be registered with NDIS?
This will be dependent on how your plan has been managed . If you choose to have your funds managed through the NDIA, NDIA registered providers will be paid on your behalf. It also means that you cannot use non-NDIS registered provider. This is a problem for small cleaning services, as they may not have the resources, finances, and time required to register as NDIS providers.
If you are the NDIS Plan Manager for your plan, such as our team at Afea, you will have more flexibility. You’ll have more options in this situation as you can use both registered and unregistered providers to clean your house.
What to Consider When Choosing a Cleaner
It is an important decision to make when deciding who you want to allow into your home to help with your daily needs. While you have the right to make household decisions on your own, here are some guidelines to help you.
- What will it cost me? Before you hire someone to do the job, it’s a good idea for everyone to know the costs of the services. NDIS services are charged at an hourly rate, as described in the NDIS Pricing Guide. It is best to hire a cleaner who can offer services within these rates.
- Is the cleaner an ABN (Australian Business number)? Your cleaner will be able to issue you an invoice if they have an ABN. This can then be used to claim funding.
- Have they signed a service contract? This agreement clearly states how and when you will receive your services and what the cost will be. It is a good idea to have a service agreement for cleaners and other providers that you might hire.
- What are my requirements for an NDIS cleaning service provider? Other than financial considerations, you might also be looking for a cleaner who is fluent in the language, works in a particular way, and has a personality that suits your needs.
